Sat 12:30pm “Mobility for Health” Class

Sat "Mobility for Health" Class

UPDATE: have added pricing for single-class drop-ins for parents whose schedule is unpredictable

Dear Dojo Community,

Earlier this year, the dojo put out a survey, to which a number of you responded positively to the possibility of a class geared for parents ie more towards health and fitness than traditional karate.

As such I’m pleased to announce that the Sat 12:30pm All Adults class will be restructured as Mobility for Health. The change will occur in 2 weeks on Sat September 27th.

The class is intended to be accessible to parents of karate students, including those whose do not engage in regular exercise. Workouts will emphasize body awareness (flexibility, core, and cardio) over martial intent. The exercises will be drawn from a diverse range of source, including Yoga, Physical Therapy (PT), Tai Chi, Pilates, and Thai Massage.

Beyond the physical training, there will be deep dives into concepts pertaining to physical and mental health, eastern philosophy and culture, and community building, with many exercises conducted as pairs or groups.

Due to a recent spate of personal injuries, I will not only instruct but also participate in the class. Moreover, it will periodically feature guest instructors from KNMA and other venues who have direct experience with rehabilitation and therapy.

A natural concern for parents is what about their kids? As the class comes immediately after the 11:30am Int. + Adv. Kids class, the seating area will be dedicated space for kids to read, work on homework, play chess, draw, or other such recreational activities. Also students are welcome to light snacks and refreshments provided they are attentive to keeping the area tidy and cleaning after themselves. One key stipulation is no electronic devices, unless part of a specific project such as learn-to-code or foreign language instruction.

Pricing

As always, all new students are welcome to one free trial class.

After that, pricing is based on number of household members have membership of any form (ie include kids in the count) at our dojo:

 – 1st household member: $75 / month

 – 2nd: $60 / month

 – 3rd: $45 / month

 – 4th onward: free

UPDATE: for those whose schedule is unpredictable, you can drop-in and pay per class:

 – 1-time drop-in: $20/class

 – 10-pack (6 month expiry): $180

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, and look forward to seeing a new cohort on the mat on Sat Sept 27th!
